~ Wind Energy Tour ~
Sunday, June 29
What's up with wind energy in Washoe County? We'll get an idea by touring the BLM site of a wind farm application in the Pahrah Range NE of Sparks. We will also visit off-the-grid homeowners near this site who are powering their needs with wind and solar. This is an afternoon event only, in the spirit of increasing our awareness of wind energy potential in our area. Some walking. Easy.
More information & RSVP call: David von Seggern (775-303-8461).

The Northern Nevada Writers' Conference Presents:
~ TORTURE - IT'S THE LAW! ~
The Writer as Social Conscience
A Symposium on Social Justice
Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13
First United Methodist Church
207 West First Street
Reno, Nevada
A two-day exploration of the writer's responsibility to social justice and limits to freedom of expression under the Bush/Cheney regime.
Keynote Speaker: Lee Rowland, an attorney with the ACLU of Nevada, will speak about the far-reaching ramifications that the "War on Terror" has had on freedom of expression and our civil liberties, including "ideological exclusion" (which allows foreign writers and scholars to be illegally barred from entering the United States); the chilling potential for abuse of the suspension of Habeas Corpus; the infamous torture memos, extraordinary rendition (which allows "terrorists" to be held indefinitely without trial), the "state secrets" privilege, and domestic spying. A Round Table Discussion will follow.
