THIS WEEK WAL-MART, NISSAN & RENAULT MADE MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENTS REGARDING
ELECTRIC VEHICLES (EVS). ON SATURDAY, NORTHERN NEVADANS CAN VIEW
HISTORIC AND MODERN EVS AT THE NATIONAL AUTO MUSEUM AND PARTICIPATE IN
A DISCUSSION ABOUT EVS, PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE
RENO, NV -- The fastest an individual could travel in the 1800's was
about three miles an hour, the speed of a horse's gait.
"With the introduction of the horseless carriage the pace of life
accelerated four fold," said Bob Tregilus, chair of the Alternative
Transportation Club & Electric Auto Association of Northern Nevada.
"People could suddenly travel easily at a whopping 12 miles per hour.
Most people aren't too surprised about that, but when I tell them the
first cars were electric they are shocked!"
Viable electric vehicles (EVs) were on the road several years before
their smoke bleaching internal combustion engine cousins. And EVs have
never left the scene.
"After a few legislative set-backs today's EVs are powerful, fast, no
compromise cars and trucks capable of traveling distances in excess of
200 miles and the technology exists for re-charging them in as little
as 10 minutes," Tregilus said. "Given the average American household
has 2 cars and their owners commute less than 40 miles per day an EV is
the perfect solution to reduce carbon emissions that contribute to
global warming and to address the national security threat posed by
America's dependence on foreign oil."
Electric vehicles are once again poised to jump ahead of petroleum
powered cars.
This week Nissan & Renault announced a joint venture to produce both
battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
On the same day, during a corporate speech, Wal-Mart CEO, Lee Scott,
said, "I have been talking with the heads of the major auto
manufacturers over the past few weeks. And I have been asking them if
there is a place for Wal-Mart in the plug-in electric car market.
Imagine [our] customers pulling into [our] parking lots, and seeing
wind turbines and solar panels, and being able to charge their cars
while they shop. I think that would make them feel good about shopping
at [our] stores."
On display for Saturday's event are a 2007 "no compromise" 100%
electric Phoenix Motorcars SUV juxtaposed to a 1914 Detroit Electric
Roadster. Presentations about EVs and their batteries will be conducted
by local club members and a local company, Altairnano Inc, that
manufactures the batteries for the Phoenix SUV.
The display is in place and the media is encouraged to take advantaged
of this compare and contrast photo opportunity.
