“YEAR 41 since Dr. King’s Death –
*Chaos or Community?
Wilderness or Promised Land?”
(Special Focus on Community Issues)*

Please come to FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH next Saturday, February 23, 
10 AM, for an hour-long planning meeting.  209 West First Street, 
validated parking at Sierra & First

The proposed event we are planning is the
WEEKEND OF APRIL 4 TO 6 –
Observing the 40th anniversary of Dr. King’s Assassination – Remembering 
his Life, Death and “Unfinished Business” –
such as, The Poor Peoples Campaign and Resurrection City –
and asking in the words of his last book –
“WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE: CHAOS OR COMMUNITY?”  WILDERNESS OR PROMISED 
LAND?

We are inviting the Rev. Phillip C. Lawson to spend the weekend with 
us.  Rev. Lawson’s ministry is committed to the tradition of nonviolent 
direct action in the spirit of Dr. King.  He is a founder of the 
California-wide Inter-faith Coalition for Immigrant Rights and more 
recently of the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.  Rev. Lawson served 
10 years as president of the Hercules (CA) NAACP and currently chairs 
the Board of Directors for Soul Force. 
PROPOSED WEEKEND EVENTS --
Friday night, 4/4 – Community-Building Memories of Dr. King
Saturday morning. 4/5 – Workshops on Immigration and Nonviolent Direct 
Action; Cultural Displays & Presentations
Sunday morning, 4/6 – Rev. Lawson preaches on Dr. King’s Vision of “The 
World House” for our time and place!
