I just spoke to Elizabeth again....she is really pleased that a lot of people will be coming in support of what has been happening, and she may be organizing a vigil for the public to take part in along with the cardboardbox city event. But she did say it is important to let her know if you are going to stay over night so they have some idea of how many people will be there meals, etc) and how many boxes are needed. Her phone number is 284-5566 (office), 297-5838 (cell and the email is ihndirector at sbcglobal.net

            Friends,
I believe we are facing a huge "Not in our name", “teaching/learning” moment this Friday night. A homeless man was beaten to death this month across the bridge in "Brick Park" by two teens. Other beatings of homeless people occurred last Saturday. Two homeless men were attacked by "a group of four to six teens in Deer Park with sticks, bats, and broken tree branches", and then sprayed "with pepper spray in an unproved attack". "Reno police found 'Kill the homeless', 'WASP', death threats to blacks and swastika symbols written on park benches in downtown Reno". The local shelters are filling up with men and women fearful that they might be killed in their sleep. [Quotes from yesterday's RGJ].

This Friday night there is a "Cardboard Box City" encampment in Wingfield Park, originally organized as solidarity with homeless, and a fundraiser for the Interfaith Hospitality Network, or Family Promise. We need to get our religious and peacekeeping communities activated to fill this park to overflowing capacity. We need a memorial to James Markham Beasley, the homeless man who died, to be set up in Brick Park where he was beaten.

This can become a symbol of community outrage and love. We need church youth groups, school groups, the Holland Project, Food Not Bombs, etc to join in. We need to reach out to all groups to join in: both conservative and liberal churches, republicans, democrats, libertarians, and greens. We do not want just the usual suspects to be there.

And since we are going to stress the capacity of the organizing groups, we need to help with the infrastructure needs [dinner,
]. Can you join in yourself, and help spread the word?
  Thank-you.

      Hi everyone,
Cardbard box city is this Friday, and registration is from 4:30-5:30pm. If you don't have $100 in pledges, that's OK..you can come with what you have!! I sppke to Elizabeth Downey on Monday and she said there were lots of donations from people who weren't planning on sleeping there, so not to worry about what we have. Any amount is wonderful and will be accepted. Go to www.cbcreno.com to register....email Elizabeth and let her know you plan on attending so they have enough boxes!!!
In light of the recent news of the escalating violence against the homeless, I think it is SO important we be there....lisa
