EMERGENCY RALLY TO PROTEST BUSH VETO FOR CHILDREN'S HEALTH CARE: Thurs., 10/4, 6pm, Fed. Bldg
     contact: Lisa Stiller 232-2823

WHAT: A rally to protest Bush's 10/3 veto of the S-CHIPS (State Children's Health Insurance Program) - legislation which would fund 3-4million uninsured children living in families earning less than 300% of the Federal Poverty level.
A family that could be impacted by this legislation will be present.

  When: Thursday, Oct. 4th, 6-6:30pm
(people will be there at 5:30, and wil be available to press at any time during the day.)

Where: Federal Building, 400. S. Virgina St.

Who: Movon.org along with various concerned Northern Nevada residents are supporting this rally.

President Bush has just vetoed a bill that had a large amount of bipartisan support. The legislation would expand the program to children in families not currently eligible - families that cannot afford private health insurance and are uncovered by employers. The program now covers about 6.6 million low income people, mostly children. Thousands of Nevada children could be added to the program under the bill vetoed by President Bush. (Currently there are about 106,000 uninsured children in NV; about 80% are eligible for the current program.) As Nevada has one of the most bare-bones federal medical programs in the country, this legislation is especially important to our state.
Congressman Heller vetoed the bill. We call on him to join other Republicans who plan to over ride the president's veto and support health care for kids. Health care for low income, uninsured kids benefits everyone: we are protecting children, our most important resource; by providing health care now, we are preventing more serious (and costly) problems later; kids with access to health care are more likely to have better school attendance and performance.
