July 4th Recognition
Thompson Federal Building, 400 S. Virginia St., Reno
10am-noon
*WHAT:* A reading of the Declaration of Independence and selected
amendments of the U.S. Constitution. The purpose is to remind people
that July 4th was intended as a day for us to remember just how
important and precious our rights are. It is a day to celebrate this
document and all it stands for. There will also be patriotic singing at
the beginning and close of the event.
*WHEN: *July 4th, 10am-noon
*WHERE:* Thompson Federal Building, 400 S. Virginia St., Reno
*WHO: *This event is being put on by Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace
*OTHER: *We are reading the Declaration with selected amendments to the
U.S Constitution as "a reminder of the social contract that was started
by the Declaration of Independence and guaranteed by the Constitution,"
states Shane Piccinini, chairperson of the Sierra Interfaith Action for
Peace.
"This event is about what is at the very core of being an American."
We celebrate July 4th, the day the Declaration was officially
"adopted", with parades, barbecues, fireworks, and parties. In the
process of the fun and the chance to spend time with friends and family,
we lose sight of the original purpose of the day: our country's
commitment to ideals that were formed as the social contract defined in
the Declaration. These ideals are what we are celebrating, and we must
not lose sight of their significance as we watch current events unfold.
We must always remember our commitment to them and our commitment to
upholding them for all Americans.
