PRESS RELEASE
PEACE ACTIVISTS and CONCERNED RESIDENTS WILL PROTEST SIGNING OF THE MILITARY COMMISSION ACT OF 2006
What: Peace activists and concerned residents will protest the signing by President Bush of the Military Commission Act of 2006, scheduled to take place Tuesday morning (Oct. 17).
Where: Sidewalk outside the Thompson Federal Bldg, 400 S. Virginia St.
When: 9:30- 10:15am
What: President Bush is signing the Military Commission Act of 2006, an act which erodes habeas corpus protections granted by the Bill of Rights, which allows intelligence agencies to redefine US obligations under the Geneva Convention about the use of torture to allow for a "flexible" standard, and which will allow punishment on the basis of coerced testimony. The Act sets up military commissions to try "alien unlawful enemy combatants" engaged in or supporting hostilities against the US. Some interpretations claim that the legislation would allow for American citizens to be picked up under this act and labeled as unlawful enemy combatants.
